However, as many of my readers would know, I am a pretty huge soccer (“football”) fan. I am one of those people who took vacation days last summer to watch the FIFA World Cup matches. (And “Yes”… I shed tears of joy when Landon Donovan scored that winner against Algeria in extra time to win their group for the first time in 80 years!)
For those of you looking for biblical stuff, I apologize. This post today is about the beautiful game:
The world governing body for soccer is FIFA. FIFA is comprised of six “confederations”: Europe (UEFA), Africa (CAF), Asia (AFC), Oceana (OFC), South America (CONMEBOL), and North America (CONCACAF).
The United States Men’s National Team is a member of CONCACAF.
Each confederation has their own tournament on off-years from the FIFA World Cup. This summer is the United States’ confederation tournament, the CONCACAF 2011 Gold Cup, which began yesterday. The Yanks take the pitch in their first game tomorrow night in Detroit.
The United States plays host to this edition of the Gold Cup tournament. Mexico are the defending champions, but the United States is always a favorite having won two out of the last three and three of the last five Gold Cups. They are in group C.
Here is the schedule for the games for the United States including their likely schedule in the elimination rounds. All the group matches are televised on Fox Soccer Channel and all times are Eastern:
Group Stage: Tuesday, June 7:
United States v Canada, 8:00 PM in Detroit
Group Stage: Saturday, June 11:

2011 Gold Cup Final: Saturday, June 25, 9:00 PM

So wear your colors on Tuesday and support our boys all the way to the 2011 Gold Cup Final!
